Zensible Moving Tips
Moving? Down-sizing? These are helpful tips to achieve an organized and successful move!
Create a moving checklist detailing everything that needs to be done before, during, and after the move. Decide where things will go, and who is responsible for what. Give yourself sufficient time for planning the move, packing, and unpacking.
LET IT GO
Why waste money and time moving things you are not using, and most likely won't use later? Take with you those items you really need, use, and love.
Discard all broken items before the move. Donate usable items to a local charity or hold a garage sale.
HIRE A MOVING COMPANY
If hiring a moving company, choose one with experience and an established reputation for good service and reliability.
Getting help from a Professional Organizer, family members, or friends will save you time and money.
Buy boxes in various sizes, or get free ones from local merchants, but make sure they have lids, are clean, and in good condition.
USE A SYSTEM
Label PRIORITY all boxes containing documents and essential items you will need the first few days. Label all other boxes according to their content and place of origin, or by destination.
Buy a good supply of wrapping paper and heavy- duty tape. Items wrapped in newspaper will be soiled in ink and will require washing after unpacking.
Use thick felt pens for labeling boxes with information such as contents, destination room, and fragile. You can also use colored stickers to identify rooms and boxes.
PACK ROOM BY ROOM
To eliminate confusion and save time when you're unpacking, it is better to pack room-by-room. Keep in mind that fully packed boxes are easier to handle if they don't exceed 50 lbs.
MAKE A SURVIVAL KIT
A survival kit should include items that will get you through the first night, such as non-perishable food, a can opener, paper plates, plastic utensils, bottled water, a flashlight, towels, sheets, toiletries, toilet paper, and a change of clothes for everyone.
TAKE A TOOL KIT
When setting up your new home, you will need a toolbox that contains basic tools and hardware, such as a hammer, a cordless drill, screwdrivers, nails, hooks, and batteries.
When arriving at the new place, arrange furniture first, and then unpack personal items. Leave artwork and accessories for later. Set up bedroom furniture, and make the beds. Now you will be able to enjoy a good night's sleep at you new home!
